Andrew Zuckerman has given exotic birds the supermodel treatment, producing an astonishing collection of images in his new book, Bird.
Zuckerman and a team of bird specialists enticed the inhabitants of several aviaries to swoop, soar and posture in front of a simple white sheet. The result is startlingly vivid and lifelike shots of birds outside their normal environments, which makes for a wild visual experience. With each of the 87 entries (from African Fish Eagle to, yes, Wild Turkey) comes helpful information such as genus, height and wingspan, plus most of the entries include each bird’s personalized call. The pictures even seem to capture a bit of bird personality: a Red-legged Seriema stalks through its shot; a puffed-up Great Horned Owl regally poses; a Golden Eagle glares (rather vengefully) at the camera.
Zuckerman is an accomplished photographer and filmmaker whose previous books include “Wisdom,” a coffee-table compilation of portraits of celebrity graybeards and their reflections on life, and “Creature,” an equally sumptuous album of animal studio shots. That volume is the photographic mother lode from which all but a handful of the images in “Creature ABC” have been drawn.

Thomas Mangold doesn't feel he has a work history like many of us have. After school and civil service, he went off to study Visual Communications in Dortmund where he still lives. During these studies, he had the opportunity for an internship at the advertising agency Grey Dusseldorf and also began to receive invites to publish his photographic series in magazines. Around this time, a new professor at the college arranged a one week intensive seminar in Strata 3D. “Being familiar with computers from the time of the VC20, which preceded the Commodore 64,” says Thomas, “I immediately liked the idea, and I tried to solve some of my semester tasks with the help of Strata, instead of doing it the photographic way.“
